Tierra Haynes, ’06, creates online community for moms to support each other.
Tierra Haynes, ’06, used her own experiences as a parent to create an online community free of judgement for moms to support each other through the many challenges of motherhood. Her company, Mommy on the Move, started in 2016 after she decided to stay home and care for her three boys while her husband – a fellow Golden Flash alum - worked as a college basketball coach. Her podcast shares her journey through motherhood and her family’s multiple relocations around the world. Tierra is also the author of "The Adventures of Us: Getting to Know Guion Bluford Jr.", a children's book that tells the remarkable story of the first Black astronaut. This is the first in what Tierra plans to be a series that illustrates the achievements of Black individuals in American history.
KSU: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
TH: Freedom. The freedom to live life in the ways that make me happy. A glass of red wine. My closest friends and family around me. Good food. Good music. A beach nearby. A smile on my face.
KSU: What is your favorite trait in others?
TH: Honesty. It's what gives me the space to feel like I can fully be myself.
KSU: What trait about yourself do you like the least?
TH: I cry when I’m angry.
KSU: Who has had the greatest influence on your life?
TH: I feel like everything I do has the best parts of my late grandmother attached to them. She was, and will always be, my prime example of what I strive to be as a woman, wife and mother. She was everything!
KSU: What is your favorite Kent State memory?
TH: It's so hard to choose just one, but probably my graduation day. As a first-generation college graduate it meant so much to me and my family to walk across that stage and receive my degree.
KSU: What is your favorite journey?
TH: Motherhood has brought so many things out of me as a person that I never knew were there.
KSU: What is your guilty pleasure?
TH: Reality TV.
KSU: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
TH: My children will always be the best thing I've ever done.
KSU: If you could come back as one person, who would it be?
TH: Beyonce, duh!
KSU: What part of your college experience most formed who you are today?
TH: Being on the Golden Reflections dance team. I met some of the women that would remain my closest friends in life, and we literally formed a sisterhood that will last a lifetime.
