Students in the Wild: Angel Guinn Engineers Her Future at Goodyear

In our latest internship spotlight, we feature College of Aeronautics and Engineering student Angel Guinn, whose journey at Goodyear exemplifies how valuable hands-on experience can be for engineering students preparing to enter the workforce.

Angel, a senior mechatronics engineering major, served as a facilities intern at Goodyear's headquarters in Akron, Ohio, during Summer 2024, where she worked on plant design and maintenance projects spanning sustainability, mechanical, and electrical systems. Her team's mission was to advance Goodyear's manufacturing facilities through forward-thinking design choices and smart innovation.

"I pursued this opportunity because I didn't feel like I knew enough in my field yet," Angel explains. Her journey with Goodyear actually began with a one-month internship with the chief of sustainability. The company's flexibility with her academic and work schedule made such a positive impression that Angel felt encouraged to return for a more extended experience.

During her internship, Angel developed valuable technical skills, learning to independently manage processes like hydraulics calculations while enhancing her design capabilities. The experience has shaped her career trajectory toward project management, with plans to transition to a full-time position at Goodyear after her December graduation.

When asked about facing challenges as an intern, Angel offers wisdom that could benefit all students: "You are expected not to know everything, so ask questions." She recommends keeping track of all questions, even if that means listing them on a tablet, to maximize the learning experience.

A highlight of Angel's internship was the opportunity to connect with leadership through one-on-one meetings that addressed not only career alignment but also broader life goals. Another memorable moment came when she completed Goodyear's training resources and was challenged to apply her knowledge beyond just assigned readings.

For students considering similar paths, Angel's advice is straightforward: "Put yourself out there and don't be afraid to say what your skills are." She also expressed a wish that she had "encouraged more of my peers to reach out and be interns and to keep going."

As Angel's story shows, when you Dare Mighty Things, you open doors to experiences that can shape your future. Her willingness to step outside her comfort zone, ask questions, and embrace new challenges has set her on a path to career success—proving that our graduates don't just dream big, they achieve big.
