The Runway

The Runway is home to three laboratories that support hands-on, simulated training in all three areas of air traffic control: Tower, Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) and En-Route.  The simulation workstations can be used to create any combination of tower, terminal, and en route controller positions, and provide future air traffic controllers with the look and feel of an actual air traffic control facility. This space houses a $2 million Air Traffic Control simulator that is identical to the equipment found in the Federal Aviation Association’s (FAA) training center in Oklahoma City.

Training students in all three areas of air traffic control is part of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering’s systematic approach to education and professional development. Having a comprehensive and complete understanding of how the areas of Air Traffic Control work together,  provides a career of possibility and preparedness to fill developmental air traffic control specialist positions in both terminal and en route options. Students pursuing other aeronautics concentration pathways are encouraged to take courses in the ATC in order to better understand air-space.

The Runway creates a dynamic learning environment with adaptable teaching and research spaces. These labs are located in the lower level of the Aeronautics and Engineering Building and this training facility provides students with a broad understanding of the aviation industry and the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed at the FAA Academy upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics, concentrating in Air Traffic and Airspace Management.
