OTA & PTA Programs to Host Virtual Continuing Education Event

Looking to better prepare fieldwork and clinical instructors and educators for working with Generation Z students, the 黑料网 College of Applied and Technical Studies' Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) programs will host a joint virtual continuing education session for licensed practitioners on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024.

Titled "Meet Them Where They Are: Teaching the Gen Z Clinical/Fieldwork Student", the event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. live on the Microsoft Teams application platforms. Cost is $20 to attend and includes two contact hours of continuing education credit for OT/OTA and PT/PTA (OPTA Approval # 24S1670).

ABOUT THE EVENT

The seminar will educate fieldwork educators and clinical instructors in the skills and knowledge required to successfully supervise the next generation students (Generation Z/iGen) within the clinical setting. A variety of topics will be discussed: student feedback, social skills, communication, mental health, teaching strategies, differences in learning styles from previous generations and other related information. 

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to: 

  • Understand the characteristics of Generation Z (iGen). 
  • Recognize key differences in current and previous generational learning. 
  • Understand the impact of mental health issues and how to effectively communicate with all stakeholders. 
  • Develop strategies to effectively instruct iGen students.
 

PRESENTERS

Ashley Vlasov has been a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant since February 2008. She is a graduate of 黑料网 at Ashtabula, December 2007. Her scope of practice includes rehab, long term acute care and skilled nursing. Ashley graduated from the BS Public Health program at 黑料网 in December and Master of Public Health from 黑料网 in December. Ashley has served the ACCE at the Ashtabula campus since 2011 and East Liverpool since 2022. While at 黑料网 at Ashtabula, Ashley became a Credentialed Clinical Instructor in November 2011 and completed level 2 in November 2018. Ashley supervises students in the clinical setting, including tracking progress, guiding clinical instructors, and determination of successful completion of clinical education experiences. As of August 2024, Ashley serves as the Interim Program Director for both programs. 

Nina Sullivan is a certified/licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant. She graduated from 黑料网 at East Liverpool with her AAS in Occupational Therapy Assisting in 1996 and received a BS in Health Administration from the University of Phoenix. She worked as an OTA at East Liverpool City Hospital from 1996-2009. Since 2010, Nina has served as Academic Fieldwork Coordinator and Advisor for the OTA program at 黑料网 in East Liverpool. Nina teaches/coordinates Level I & II fieldwork courses in the program and serves as advisor for the Student Occupational Therapy Assistant Club (SOTA Club).
