Kent State Journalism Professor Says Clinton Nomination Highlights Double Standard

Danielle Sarver Coombs, Associate Professor in the College of Communication and Information, feels that women have to run their campaigns differently than their male counterparts.

She recently shared her views with the Akron Beacon Journal for a story about Hillary Clinton's selection as the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party.

“ ‘You have to smile more. Don’t be shrill. You’re yelling,’ ” Coombs said in the story. “Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump can go out and yell, and it’s not a problem.”

Coombs studies electoral politics, specifically in relation to media framing. Her book Last Man Standing: Media, Framing, and the 2012 Republican Primaries (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015) examines the media frames that emerged to characterize Republican candidates in 2012.

She has multiple peer-reviewed articles in publications such as the International Journal of Sport Communication and the Journal of Public Relations Research. She also serves as a reviewer for Communication Studies, Journal of Sports Media, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and Mass Communication and Society.
