Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (ADN) Students Experience a Live Surgery at Kent State Regional Academic Center

A new and exciting experience was provided to the Kent State Regional Academic Center’s first year ADN (Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Degree) students.

On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, the nursing students experienced a live surgical broadcast from University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center with Dr. A. Goel, MD, general surgeon, and his surgery team. Dr. Goel lead the interactive learning experience, which included observation of an endoscopic procedure, along with a virtual curriculum provided by the perioperative team of nurses and the nurse anesthetist.

These types of learning opportunities provide our nursing students with examples of different types of nursing fields that are available in this certain career path. This specific surgery observation gave the students an inside look at how a surgery is conducted, but the students were also able to observe and receive first-hand information on the importance of collaboration in an inter-professional team and how it relates to positive patient outcomes.

This is another example of how community and higher education can work together!
