MCLS Funding

If you are applying for a graduate degree within the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies, you may want to apply for a graduate assistantship as well. Kent State provides a variety of funding opportunities to support graduate students, helping them to manage the costs of their education.

Teaching Assistantships at Kent State

For students in the Modern and Classical Language Studies (MCLS) department, a teaching assistantship (TA) offers financial assistance while providing valuable teaching experience.

Teaching assistants in MCLS assist faculty with instructional responsibilities and serve as the primary instructor for certain courses. Their duties may include grading assignments, administering exams, holding office hours, and leading laboratory or discussion sessions.

These positions allow graduate students to enhance their academic knowledge, develop professional teaching skills, and receive financial support to help fund their graduate studies.

The Competitive Nature of Assistantships

It is important to recognize that the application process for the TA and other assistantships is highly competitive, and there are only a limited number of assistantships available each year. Selection depends on factors such as academic performance and departmental needs.

While we award most assistantships to doctoral students, we encourage all graduate students to apply. Compensation typically includes a tuition waiver and a stipend in exchange for 10-20 hours of work per week.

Applicants should reach out to their graduate coordinator for the academic program or view the  section on Handshake to inquire about the availability of assistantships and funding.
