Police Academy grow beards and community goodwill

This fall, Kent State Trumbull Police Academy grew beards and donations for the Warren Family Mission.

Typically, facial hair is discouraged while cadets complete their coursework in the academy; every November and December, that changes. Cadets participate in No-Shave November and dress-down days to raise money to support the works of Warren Family Mission.

In early December, cadets donated over $300 in gift cards and then shopped with families and assisted with loading vehicles and organizing stations. According to Jim Willock, director of Kent State Trumbull's Public Safety Training & Basic Peace Officer Training Academy, this initiative is one of many meant to connect cadets with the community.

"As a STAR Academy designated by the Ohio Attorney General's Office, we take pride in the extra training we provide," Willock said. "Cadets go all-in and embrace these opportunities to give back to our communities."

Spring cadets delivered meals and distributed Easter baskets to local families through the Warren Family Mission. They also volunteered at the Mission's 25th Annual Easter Dinner by serving and clearing tables.

"We appreciate these opportunities to give back to the local families through the Warren Family Mission," Cadet Makenzie Butcherine said. "Through this wonderful organization, we were blessed with the ability to spread some holiday cheer and create some lifelong memories for those children and parents this Christmas."

Kent State Trumbull offers a Basic Peace Officer Training Academy and is designated as a regional provider for advanced training in Northeast Ohio. Spring classes are full; however, applications are available for classes beginning in the Fall of 2024. For more information, visit www.kent.edu/policeacademy.
