The School of Biomedical Sciences is a consortium graduate program between ºÚÁÏÍø, Northeast Ohio Medical University, and the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute.     We investigate the molecular and biological processes governing the development of brain malignancies, including primary (e.g., glioblastoma) and metastatic (tumors originating from other locations in the body, such as breast cancer) brain cancers. Our goal is to develop novel immunotherapeutic strategies for patients with brain cancers.

    We investigate and develop new methods and tools to record neurons in the brain using nonlinear microscopy and protein sensors. Our goals are to better understand the role of brain circuits and the efficacy of novel neuroprotective treatments in rodent models of neurodegenerative and neurological conditions.

    We investigate early mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease. Our goal is to discover how disruption of basic functions of the body can drive disease processes that destroy the brain. We study how integrin protein dysfunction is an early driver of AD pathology, and how AD pathology affects visual system signaling.

    We investigate mechanobiology processes at the single-molecular, molecular assembly, and cellular level. We use optical tweezers to reveal interactions between individual nucleic acid structures and motor proteins (e.g. polymerases) from mechanical perspectives. At the cellular level, we strive to probe the effect of molecular machineries such as protein aggregates and organelles on cell mechanics such as migrations and divisions.

    We investigate cells in the brain that regulate gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, the final output cells in a large neural network controlling fertility. Our research is focused on identifying changes in these networks that underlie the development of common forms of infertility, such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

    We are a bioinformatics lab, studying patterns of RNA editing in the context of host-pathogen interactions, and how RNA editing changes in brain health and disease. We currently focus on the role of ADAR editing changes in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer diseases, and mental health disorders.

    We investigate the inflammatory component of Alzheimer's disease using various mouse models. We are interested in microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, as well as components of the circulating peripheral immune system and their interactions with microglia, as well as how these cells may respond differently based on sex.

    We investigate how aging and neurological disorders limit movement in humans. Our current research examines the benefits of exercise and rehabilitation training on motor function in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Research methods used in human subjects research include movement assessment/evaluation, electromyography and Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

    We investigate brain circuits that modulate how we hear in different environments, during growth and aging, and after damage to the ear or the brain. We use sophisticated neural tracing methods to characterize neural circuits in rodents so we can understand how those circuits contribute to hearing.

    We investigate microbiome-host interactions in the oral cavity, particularly in the setting of gum disease (one of the most prevalent inflammatory conditions worldwide) and comorbidities such as diabetes and oral cancer. We are specifically interested in how host diet and inflammation regulate microbe-microbe interactions within the oral microbiome and how these interactions in turn impact host fitness. Long-term, our goal is to translate our findings into more targeted microbiome-directed therapeutics.

    We investigate how microbial symbionts shape the ecology and evolution of their vertebrate hosts. Our lab uses a combination of multi-omic techniques, germ-free animal experiments, and natural history studies to determine how intestinal microorganisms affect the phenotypes of wild vertebrates in nature.

    We investigate mechanisms by which emotional brain centers such as the amygdala interact with the auditory system to establish the meaning of speech and other social vocalizations. We seek to relate these mechanisms to acoustic communication behavior and to disorders resulting in altered emotional responses to speech.
