Kathryn Wilson, Ph.D. Receives Numerous Teaching Honors in 2023-24

Kent, OHIO – Kathryn Wilson, Ph.D., professor of economics at Kent State’s Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship, was recognized for exemplary teaching with numerous awards during the 2023-24 academic year.

In the fall, Wilson received the Kent State Distinguished Teaching Award. This award is the university’s most prestigious honor in teaching and is presented annually to three faculty members who demonstrate extraordinary teaching in the classroom and devotion to touching the lives of students.

“I absolutely love teaching economics. That makes being recognized for my teaching feel so rewarding,” Wilson said. “I share this award with every student who has joined me in the learning partnership. I am extremely grateful.”

In addition, Wilson was named Kent State’s representative for The Mid-American Conference Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success this spring. This award celebrates the commitment of the MAC to a holistic student experience and the creation of an environment that supports success in school and in life.

Wilson was also the recipient of the Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship’s Teaching Award for 2024. This award is given annually to a faculty member who has excelled in teaching.

“Kathy Wilson truly embodies an educator who puts students first and these recognitions demonstrate the profound impact her teaching has had on her students,” said Deborah F. Spake, Ph.D., dean of the Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Wilson earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1996 and has been at ever since. She has taught a variety of courses, including Public Finance, Economics of Health Care, Economics of Poverty, and Principles of Microeconomics. Currently she teaches the Economics capstone, Senior Seminar and Principles of Macroeconomics. Her research primarily focuses on poverty, inequality, and social mobility and has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Public Economics, Demography, and Review of Income and Wealth.
