Jenna Gilbreath, '23

"Through COMM and my Media Advocacy minor, I have learned the power of my own voice and a story."

Jenna Gilbreath, '23 is a Communication Studies major with minors in Media Advocacy and Nonprofit Studies. Her interest in COMM was sparked through the never-ending transferable skills and flexibility within the major. Throughout her years at Kent State, she has become involved in several different organizations.

Jenna credits her major and minors to her success throughout her educational experiences. She is President of the student organization Thirst Project, and has used her COMM skills and connections to build partnerships with CCI student organizations. Her interests also led her to get involved with Undergraduate Student Government (USG), first as the Senator for the College of Communication and Information and then as the Director of Student Involvement.

Most recently, she was elected Student Body President for 2022-23. She highlighted how influential both her major and minor were in achieving this position.

鈥淭hrough COMM and my Media Advocacy minor, I have learned the power of my own voice and a story.鈥疶hroughout my decision and then campaign for Student Body President, I was brought back to this idea. This idea of the single story and how important each student's experience is on campus. I know that by no means am I able to hold the identities of all students, but I will do as much as I can to make sure all students feel heard,鈥 Jenna says.

Her advice to future COMM majors looking to get involved in the College of Communication and Information and on campus is to speak up about things you are passionate about 鈥 and know that the opportunities within COMM are endless.

鈥淭here are truly so many opportunities around every corner," she says. "There is something here for everyone and you just have to look for it."
