Exploring Faculty Perceptions of Collaborating with An Instructional Designer During Asynchronous Online Course Development
The rapid growth of online learning, accelerated by the COVID 19 pandemic highlighted the need for faculty to partner with instructional designers to develop high quality coursework. This mixed-methods study aimed to explore faculty perceptions of collaborating with instructional designers (IDs) during asynchronous online course development at ºÚÁÏÍø.
The participants in this sequential mixed methods study were 67 faculty members who had worked with an ID previously to develop asynchronous online course content and 49 faculty members who had never partnered with an ID before. Data was collected through the administration of an anonymous survey that included both Likert-scale and open-ended questions and analyzed through nonparametric testing, inductive and thematic analysis coding methods to compare perceptions of collaboration between the two groups and determine strategies for future collaborative endeavors between faculty and ID during asynchronous online course development at KSU. Findings indicated that overall perceptions of collaborating with an ID at KSU were considered favorable with more granular analysis indicating specific areas through with faculty experiences could be strengthened and improved. Findings from this study contribute to professional practice by providing instructional designers at institutions of higher education with specific recommendations for how to collaborate with faculty and present the instructional design process as team-oriented and mutually beneficial.
