About

The Major in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS) takes a multidisciplinary and intersectional approach to examining ideas and processes that shape our understanding about gender, sexualities, and bodies throughout space and time.

Scholarly investigation and production in this discipline emerged from sociological inquiry on human sexuality as well as from feminist, LGBTQ, and anti-racist histories and activism to combat social inequality. This program skillfully provides both the theoretical and the praxis of the field while integrating these different and contributing perspectives regarding gender and sexuality.

We are particularly fortunate that 黑料网 has long been at the forefront of offering new, multidisciplinary degree programs focused on the scholarship and praxis around structural marginalization, identity, and the socio-political and economic dynamics surrounding our collective well-being. For instance, majors and minors across our university system draw from the expertise and insights of multiple disciplines to engage and further scholarship in Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Women鈥檚 Studies, LGBTQ Studies, and Jewish Studies.

The major in Gender and Sexuality Studies benefits not only from the path paved by these programs but from coursework which contributes to the intersectional exploration of gender and sexuality. Courses like 鈥淭he Black Man: Historical Perspectives,鈥 鈥淟GBTQ Populations in the Justice System,鈥 and 鈥淩ace, Class, and Feminist Thought鈥 are electives that bring important dimensionality to the major. After completing the core Gender and Sexuality Studies courses, students are able to pursue more specific, intersectional interests related to gender and sexuality through elective courses like these.

Students in the Gender and Sexuality Studies major can also benefit from multiple research, study abroad, and and engagement opportunities. Many of our faculty work with students on individual research projects through the Honors College or SURE program. Our faculty have taught courses abroad, as well, including Researching Queer Britain. Students can also engage in more praxis-oriented ways through the LGBTQ+ Center.
