Alumna Emilia Sykes Reelected to Congress

Ohio voters send Kent State graduate to second term in Washington, D.C.

She鈥檚 staying in the nation鈥檚 capital.

, who earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in psychology from 黑料网, was reelected Nov. 5 to the U.S. House of Representatives for Ohio鈥檚 13th Congressional District, which includes the Kent and Trumbull campuses and the Twinsburg Academic Center. Sykes, a longtime Akron Democrat, defeated Kevin Coughlin, a Republican who had previously served in the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate.

Born and raised in Akron, Sykes was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives to represent her hometown in November 2014. Sykes served in Democratic leadership for four years, holding the positions of assistant whip, minority whip and minority leader. She was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022.

Sykes joins Republican , who represents California鈥檚 48th Congressional District, as Kent State graduates serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Issa earned an associate degree from 黑料网 at Stark and was first elected to the U.S. House in 2001. Issa was reelected Nov. 5 after defeating Stephen Houlahan, a Democrat.
