Joseph Pritchard of Washingtonville received the prestigious Anna Ulen Engleman Creative Writing Award from the 黑料网 English Department. He is a junior at the Kent State Salem Campus, majoring in English. Along with his application for the award, Pritchard submitted a poem for consideration. He will be published in the June issue of Wordgathering (www.wordgathering.com).  Pritchard works as a tutor in the Learning Center on the Salem Campus and hopes to eventually complete a masters of fine arts degree. Insurance studies students from Kent State Salem attended the recent Ohio Insurance Institute鈥檚 Insurance Education Day in Columbus, during which three were awarded scholarships.  Representing the Salem chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, the international risk management, insurance and actuarial science collegiate fraternity were Jennifer Buck, president; Dan Newlin, vice president; Michele Quinn, secretary; and member Lisa Kesseg. East Liverpool 鈥 Students from Kent State East Liverpool鈥檚 occupational therapy assistant program and the physical therapist assistant program recently participated in outreach projects to help make the city a little brighter.   Students from the PTA program were part of the City Sweep event held during Earth Week. They swept sidewalks, pulled weeds and picked up litter all along the east end of Fourth Street and around the campus buildings. The Early Childhood Special Education program at 黑料网 has received federal funds to prepare individuals at the master's degree level to work with families of infants and toddlers with disabilities in early intervention settings (home and community contexts). The program is designed for individuals with existing bachelor's degrees in special education and related fields (e.g., teacher licensure or certification), but all interested individuals are encouraged to apply. East Liverpool 鈥 Kent State at East Liverpool鈥檚 Student Government Organization presented a check for $1,000 to the university鈥檚 foundation to help fund a memorial scholarship honoring the late Dr. Roxanne Burns. Burns was a longtime biology professor on the East Liverpool Campus who died last fall. She helped organize several activities on campus, including the annual Environmental Justice Conference held during Earth Week each year, and was active with numerous student organizations. The National Institute of Nursing Research at NIH has awarded Biological Science's Min-Ho Kim  a $1,842,350 five-year grant to develop 鈥渘anobombs鈥, a nanotechnology-based therapeutic platform, that can treat biofilm infection in chronic wounds.  Kim notes: "we hope to establish a novel platform for 鈥渟mart鈥 treatments for the management of antibiotic-resistant chronic wound infections".
